Back in 2002, I was looking for a funky, handmade sling bag made from soft leather for my hip. I looked everywhere. I visited all the leather shops for months on end. Later, I looked in second-hand shops, and still, nothing!
Louis’ Love for Leather Begins
One day, I went into Leatherite, a warehouse selling leather and tools in Pretoria. It was like a candy shop for a kid!
I walked out with a thin, soft goat skin, a rotating hole punch and large scissors. That night, I sat down and figured out the pattern on cardboard. Then I planned the layout on the skin carefully. After that, I cut it out along with thin strips of leather to stitch it altogether with.
It was so much fun! I just loved it!

Handmade Leather Products
A couple of months later, I moved to Port St Johns and started to use this lovely hobby to make leather products for travellers.
From there it all started!
A friend gifted me a large hand press, which I converted into a foot-operated hole punch.
Later I bought an industrial sewing machine and converted it to work with a 12v cordless drill, which worked from my solar system. We didn’t have electricity in those years.
Until today, my sewing machine works off a cordless drill, powered by the small solar system.
